SERP

A SERP, or search engine results page, is the page a search engine shows in response to a query.

In more detail

Each organic result shows a title, a URL breadcrumb and a snippet. Around the organic results, a SERP mixes in ads, featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, maps, images, videos and AI-generated summaries, depending on the query. Layout and features vary by device, location and language, so two people rarely see exactly the same page. The title usually comes from the page's <title> and the snippet from its meta description, although the search engine may rewrite either.

Why it matters

Clicks fall off sharply with position, and a rich result or answer box above you can take clicks even when you rank first. Previewing how your title and description will be truncated on desktop and mobile helps you write ones that read well.

Example

How a page's tags become a result:

example.com › tools › subnet-calculator ← URL breadcrumb
Subnet Calculator – Hosts, Ranges and Masks ← <title>
Enter an IP address and prefix to get the ← meta description
network, broadcast address, usable host range…

The SERP Snippet Preview shows the same layout for your own text before you publish it.
